Anonymous Q&A – Where to start with Demonolatry?

Q: Hello, id like to understand demonolatry/demonology a bit better. Im not sure where to start as i want to do it in a respectful and accurate way. Could you recommend me some books perhaps? Also could you please keep this as anon? Many thanks

A: Hello, thank you for reaching out to Demonolatry London!

Yes, I have a couple recommendations for books and websites that I personally use when researching or preparing to meet new demons. I think I would have found these invaluable at the start of my journey so these come highly recommended.

Books:

  1. Demonolater’s Handbook – Mirta Wake (for initial research): This book is essentially a reference guide for every main goetic demon and related non-goetic gods (aka spirits that are not technically goetic but are associated with the demonic pantheon in contemporary practice, like Lucifer and Lilith). I highly recommend this book because it gives you the traditional goetic insight, sigil, alchemical symbols, associations etc PLUS a contemporary view of them in the form of the author invoking each demon and detailing her experience with each one. This is a really good book for getting an accurate initial understanding of a demon with a personal touch added.
  2. Lucifer and the Hidden Demons – Theodore Rose (for initial invocation): This book takes you visualisation techniques that help you safely summon a demon of your choosing. I would start here once you’re ready to speak to a demon directly. My only note of caution for this book is that there are some strong opinions around certain topics – question and remain skeptical, especially at the beginning of your journey. The visualisation techniques are however pretty non-contentious (IMO).
  3. Psychic Witch – Mat Auryn (for initial occult practice): I have included this book just in case you or anyone reading this is also new to occult practice in general. It’s a great book for getting to grips with spiritual communication (the ‘clairs’). Even more importantly, it also takes you through basic protection – something really important to learn at the beginning of any occult or spiritual journey and something I see lacking in the tarot community. I recommend doing a whole host of separate research on protection because it is extremely important and can’t be overlooked.

Websites:

  1. https://www.reddit.com/r/DemonolatryPractices/ (Reddit Demonolatry HQ): This reddit thread is essentially the biggest online community of demonolatry practitioners and is host to a lot of good (supervised) Q&As. I really recommend it if you want to read more about everyone’s personal experiences, tips and warnings.
  2. https://scarletarosa.tumblr.com/ (also for initial research): I used this tumblr in my early days and even now to get another’s insight. It’s similar to Mirta Wake’s reference guide but gives a bit more information on offerings and associations. It does not cover all demons but I found that it covers a good spread.

If you feel drawn to a certain demon, let me know and I might be able to give you some specific points to consider. However, if you’re not sure where to start (or WHO to start with), I recommend doing some research into what each demon can help with (Mirta’s book covers this but you can also search generally online). This will help you find a demon you are aligned with or that you resonate with. At some point in your research you will feel drawn to know more about a particular demon or you may start getting sent signs. You might even find your patron/matron! It’s a really exciting journey and I am very grateful to have been able to help with the start of it.

If you have any more queries or are still feeling unsure on where to start or go next – please don’t hesitate to send another message again (this goes to anyone reading this).

Thank you and I hope you find this helpful,
